THE PARTITION OF INDIA (IN THE EYES OF GANDHI)

History will ask whether the attainment of India's liberty was the result of Gandhi's efforts alone. It will point out that the freedom struggle within the struggle was just one of several factors involved and that its impact cannot be judged except in relation to the political events on an international scale that were taking place at the same time. Two World Wars had so weakened Britain that it was forced to subject its position in India to a critical examination. The excessive strain put on its military resources, the severely depleted state of its finances, and the deleterious effects of the economic crises compelled Britain to ascertain whether circumstances permitted a continuance of their rule of force in India and even if so, whether it might not be possible to save themselves the present expenditure of energy and money as well as the additional international obligations, borne by them on behalf of the Indian state.
Anyway, the continuance of the British rule was ended in resulting vivisection of British India into two separate nation states i.e. India & Pakistan. During the whole forties, when the preparation process was in progress, Gandhi vehemently opposed partition. According to him, which was published in November, Issue of Harijan (in 1939) he stated that - the proposal to vivisection India is a contribution to imperialistic growth for vivisection can only be made by the British bayonet or through deadly Civil War. I hope the Congress will be party to neither game. He also again disclosed his views in 1940 as saying - As a man of Non-Violence I cannot forcibly resent the proposed partition if the Muslims of India really insist upon it. But I can never be a willing party to the vivisection. I would employ every non-violent means to prevent it. He also said that - Partition means a patent untruth. My whole soul rebels against the idea that Hinduism and Islam represent two antagonistic cultures and doctrine is for the denial of any God. The Theame of this rare collection of Gandhi based on his writings published time to time in Harijan rests on against the above doctrine.
I hope that this book will provide Gandhi devotees with the opportunity to learn many little-known historical facts—especially about the Partition of India, on which Gandhiji shared many valuable thoughts.
